Nets, Grizzlies look to end long slides
Jan 24, 2009 - 11:34 AM New Jersey (19-24) at Memphis (11-31) 8:00 p.m. ESTMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Something has to give.
With 13 consecutive losses between them, the New Jersey Nets and Memphis Grizzlies are looking for any positive signs.
The Nets and Grizzlies will each be looking to add to the winning side of the ledger when they meet on Saturday.
New Jersey suffered its fifth straight loss on Friday, 94-91, at San Antonio and has not scored 100 points in any of the setbacks. Vince Carter, Devin Harris and Brook Lopez combined for 68 points, but the six other players who saw time combined for only 23.
The Nets only committed four turnovers in San Antonio, but were outrebounded, 45-36, and were held to 42 percent shooting.
Memphis owns an eight-game losing streak and the fourth-worst record in the NBA. Offense is again the culprit, as the Grizzlies have the worst scoring offense in the Western Conference, scoring 92.9 points per game.
One of the youngest teams in the league, Memphis has leaned heavily on rookies O.J. Mayo and Marc Gasol, who lead the team in scoring and rebounding, respectively.
Mayo was held to 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting and Gasol managed only six points and five rebounds in a 108-88 loss at New York on Friday.
The Grizzlies were coached by Johnny Davis, who replaced the fired Mark Iavaroni on an interim basis. Davis is expected to run the team against the Nets while team management attempts to finalize a contract with Milwaukee assistant Lionel Hollins.
Loss No. 2 of Memphis' current skid came against New Jersey in the first meeting between the teams this season, 100-89. Carter led with 25 points for the Nets while Mayo countered with 26.
