Before grueling road trip, Nuggets square off vs. Spurs

Feb 3, 2009 - 3:19 PM San Antonio (33-14) at Denver (31-16) 9:00 p.m. EST

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs may be on a collision course for a first-round playoff meeting. If the season ended today, that would certainly be the case.

Nearly two years after the 2007 Spurs ousted Denver in the opening round, the re-tooled Nuggets get another shot at the Spurs on Tuesday night in a possible playoff preview.

Currently sitting pretty as the No. 3 seed in the West and division leader in the Northwest, the Nuggets are on the cusp of one of their toughest stretches of the season. After hosting the Spurs, they hit the road for an eight-game trip beginning Wednesday in Oklahoma City.

The Nuggets and Spurs certainly aren't strangers this season - they've met twice before, with the road team coming out on top each time. Denver dominated in a November 19 meeting in San Antonio, a 91-81 victory that wasn't even that close. Chauncey Billups collected 22 points, six assists and five boards to lead the way.

Less than a month later, the Spurs returned the favor, trouncing the Nuggets in Denver, 108-91, as Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker combined for 64 points on 24-of-44 shooting.

The series between the two clubs has been consistently close since the 2004-05 campaign, with the Spurs holding a 9-8 edge in the regular season.
