Spurs cruising into All-Star break
Feb 11, 2009 - 11:33 AM San Antonio (35-15) at Toronto (20-34) 7:00 p.m. ESTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs are surging into the All-Star break in the Western Conference.
The Spurs go for their third straight win on Wednesday when they officially close the first half against the Toronto Raptors.
San Antonio started the season with five losses in its first seven games as many questioned if the team's better years were behind it with an aging roster and supposedly declining skills.
However, the Spurs quickly reversed that trend and erased any remaining doubts as they suffered only three losses in January and have won six of their last seven games overall.
San Antonio has averaged 106.4 points in its last seven games, shooting 48.9 percent from the field after averaging 90.5 points and 40.9 percent in its previous six contests.
The rise in offensive production led to a six-point victory against the defending champion Boston Celtics on Sunday and a 108-93 triumph over the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday.
Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 27 points, nine rebounds and eight assists against the Nets but it was Matt Bonner who provided the spark for a second straight game. After pouring in 23 points against the Celtics, Bonner scored 22 and hit 4-of-5 3-pointers on Tuesday.
Bonner will play another prominent role as coach Gregg Popovich may look to rest his stars against the Raptors, who snapped a six-game losing streak with a 110-102 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.
