Celtics await word on Allen as they close out first half

Feb 12, 2009 - 11:23 AM Boston (43-11) at Dallas (31-20) 9:30 p.m. EST

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The reigning champion Boston Celtics have just gotten started on a six-game road swing through the Western Conference - a trip that began Wednesday in New Orleans and concludes February 25 against the Los Angeles Clippers.

However, they have more pressing concerns as they close out the season's first half. Going into Thursday's meeting with the Dallas Mavericks, the Celtics have to wait and see whether one of their three All-Stars will be available.

Veteran sharpshooter Ray Allen left Wednesday's victory over the Hornets in the first quarter with a hyperextended right thumb. He will be re-examined on Thursday and is listed questionable for the game against the Mavericks.

Allen is supposed to be on the court in Phoenix on Sunday for the Eastern Conference All-Stars, but his status seems up in the air.

If he is unable to go, the Celtics will have to make do without one of the main reasons why they dominated the Mavericks the last time these two squared off. In a January 25 meeting in Dallas, Allen went for 23 points - including four 3-pointers - to help pave the way for a 124-100 rout.

Then again, he had plenty of help, as fellow All-Star Kevin Garnett and reserve guard Eddie House added 23 apiece as well.

However, the Mavericks have won six of seven since, including a 118-100 rout of the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday.
