Jazz, Nuggets square off in key divisional battle

Mar 6, 2009 - 11:14 AM Denver (40-22) at Utah (38-23) 10:30 p.m. EST

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz get their shot at the team they're chasing on Friday night, as they host the Denver Nuggets in a pivotal Northwest Division clash.

The Nuggets have controlled the division for most of the season, but their lead has dwindled to 1 1/2 games over Utah and Portland. The Jazz, meanwhile, have won nine in a row and 12 of their last 13 games.

With the playoff race in the Western Conference tightening by the day, this showdown is pivotal not only for divisional supremacy, but playoff seeding in general. Only four games separate Nos. 2 through 8 in the current standings.

Carmelo Anthony scored 38 points on Thursday, triumphantly returning from a one-game suspension to lead the Nuggets to a 106-90 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.
