Samhan helps Saint Mary's hold off Hawaii 84-75

Dec 26, 2009 - 2:52 AM HONOLULU(AP) -- Omar Samhan scored 24 points to lead five players in double figures and Saint Mary's held off Hawaii 84-75 in the third-place game of the Diamond Head Classic on Friday night.

Mickey McConnell scored 17 points, Ben Allen added 15 and Matthew Dellavedova and Clint Steindl each had 12 for the Gaels (11-2).

Samhan also grabbed seven rebounds before fouling out in the final minutes.

Dwain Williams scored 36 points to lead the Rainbow Warriors (6-6).

Saint Mary's led by as many as 16 with 5:49 to play, but Hawaii pulled to 79-73 on Williams' 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. But the Gaels, who were 29 of 31 from the foul line, hit five of their last six free throws to hold on.

Saint Mary's capitalized with 30 points off 16 Hawaii turnovers.
