Mar 25 10:55 PM - LMPtG1 "Widely accepted as the premier game of the Sweet 16, the Kentucky Wildcats and the Cornell Big Red face off tonight at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. A matchup that has caused a stir in all aspects of College basketball because of the sociological comparisons and the differences between the institutions.
Sportswriters across America seem to forget the past two rounds of the Tournament where Kentucky put on a clinic against Wake Forrest and East Tennessee State.
By the numbers nothing could be more contrasted than this matchup. Kentucky owns 7 National Championships, Cornell has 7 Tournament appearances. Kentucky players will be making millions next year in the NBA, most Cornell players will be in a highly competitive job market next year. The comparisons go on forever.
You can hear all day about Eitan Chemerinski's 4.06 GPA but you probably won't hear about John Wall's 3.4. Patrick Patterson got to participate in Senior Night this year even though he is a Junior. That is because Patterson has enough credits to graduate in three years and Senior Ramon Harris will graduate in 3 1/2.
So tell me all day about Cornell's excellent academic standards but respect Kentucky's kids as well because after all they are both STUDENT-ATHLETES.
If you don't believe me ask a player who has experienced both, Big Red bench player Mark Coury.
"I studied just as much at Kentucky as I do now at Cornell,? said the 6-foot-8 Coury, who comes off the bench for the Big Red. "The players at Kentucky put in the work. There are in-house rules that freshmen have to go to study hall for two hours each day.?
"It?s the smart kids against the dumb kids,? Kentucky?s 6-foot-11 freshman Demarcus Cousins added. "That?s basically what they?re saying. We?ve got to just play basketball. It doesn?t bother me, though. It?s stupid and has nothing to do with basketball.?
The Big Red players resume should not go overlooked, they are great examples as to what a student-athlete should be but that does not mean the Wildcats are any less.
Thursday night's matchup will not be a battle of wits or an academic competition, it will be what it is supposed to be, a basketball game. So although Chemerinski can solve a Rubik's cube in 3 minutes it is not going to put points on the scoreboard."
Good Luck To Both Teams.
