Kansas tops Colorado in Boulder
Jan 26, 2011 - 5:47 AM Boulder, CO (Sports Network) - Marcus Morris and Tyrel Reed both made two big free throws down the stretch, as the sixth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks bounced back from their first loss of the season with an 82-78 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes.Marcus Morris ended with 15 points and five rebounds while Reed tallied 14 and five for the Jayhawks (19-1, 4-1 Big 12), who saw their remarkable 69-game home winning streak come to an end on Saturday with a 74-63 loss to Texas.
"Offensively, we were very efficient," said Kansas head coach Bill Self. "We had some guys make some shots. We didn't shoot as well as they did, but we made some shots and played pretty well."
Josh Selby donated 17 points for Kansas, which has won 20 straight games following a loss. Brady Morningstar chipped in with 14 points and Markieff Morris added six points and 11 boards in the win.
Alec Burks had 25 points and six rebounds for the Buffaloes (14-7, 3-3), who fell to 11-1 at home this season and saw a 14-game home winning streak come to an end. Cory Higgins tallied 19 points.
Marcus Relphorde had 15 points for Colorado, which has lost 16 in a row against Kansas.
"We will never be happy with this result, but I'm happy tonight with our basketball program," said Colorado head coach Tad Boyle. "I'll go to the end with this group if they put out that kind of effort. I thought it was a great college basketball game."
The Jayhawks led by as many as 10 in the first half, but Colorado cut the gap to 43-39 at the break.
Kansas built its margin back to 10 multiple times in the second half. The Buffaloes, though, had an answer every time and used a late run to make things interesting.
Down 71-61 with 5:43 to play, Colorado went on an 11-4 surge. Higgins and Burks each tallied four points during the burst that Relphorde capped with a three-pointer to make it 75-72 with 2:43 remaining.
Reed stopped the bleeding with a 1-of-2 performance from the line. Burks then turned the ball over, leading to a pair of Tyshawn Taylor free throws with 52.6 seconds left to make it a 78-72 game.
Relphorde made a jumper to cut the gap to four. Taylor was then called for an offensive foul on the ensuing inbound pass. Burks made two foul shots to cut Colorado's deficit to 78-76 with 31.6 ticks to go.
But Reed responded with two shots from the line at the other end to make it a four-point game again. After Higgins made a layup, Marcus Morris made two free throws to make it 82-78 with 16.9 seconds remaining.
Relphorde's layup was blocked by Markieff Morris, sealing the win for Kansas.
