K-State stuns Baylor

Feb 18, 2012 - 10:58 PM Waco, TX (Sports Network) - Angel Rodriguez and Rodney McGruder each scored 15 points, as Kansas State upset No. 9 Baylor, 57-56, at Ferrell Center.

Jordan Enrique had nine points and seven rebounds and Jamar Samuels added nine points, three blocks and two steals for the Wildcats (18-8, 7-7 Big 12), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Quincy Miller posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bears (22-5, 9-5), who have lost three of four after beginning the season 21-2. Quincy Acy led Baylor with 14 points in defeat.

Baylor had a chance to win in the final seconds, as Rodriguez's travel on a Wildcat fastbreak opportunity gave the Bears possession with 13 ticks to go.

Miller's jumper struck iron with two seconds to play, however, and Kansas State boxed out the Bears as the long rebound went out of bounds. The buzzer sounded, and the upset was complete.

"I'm just trying to do everything I can to help my team win. From the jump ball, it was all about intensity and matching their intensity. Whenever they made their run, we stayed the course. That's what Coach always preaches to us about, staying the course. When a team punches us, we have to punch them back, and that's what we did today," said Henriquez.

It wasn't an easy win for KSU. Henriquez's dunk that put the Wildcats up 57-56 was the last of 12 lead changes in the second half and the 15th overall. Kansas State never led by more than four points, with that advantage coming only twice, at halftime and at 55-51 with 3:55 to play in the second half.

As they had all game, the Bears promptly answered the second four-point Wildcat lead. After Acy converted two free throw opportunities, Pierre Jackson picked up the rebound on Samuels' three-point try, ran the length of the floor and pulled up for his own trey, this one falling through the cylinder to give Baylor a one-point edge, 56-55, with 2:11 to play.

Henriquez responded by driving strong into the paint on Kansas State's next possession for the dunk that would be the difference.

"Once we got that run we should have extended the lead. Both halves we started out well and then we missed opportunities to push the game further open," said Bears head coach Scott Drew.

With the exception of Acy, Baylor struggled offensively in the first half. Excepting Acy's 5-of-7 mark from the floor, the Bears posted a 27.2 (6-of-22) field goal percentage in the frame.

Acy provided the early spark for Baylor, scoring six points during a 10-1 run that put the Bears up 18-9 at the 8:59 mark of the first half.

Baylor made only three more shots from the floor in the period, however, and Kansas State took advantage, erasing its deficit and taking the lead with 1:58 to play. Samuels' buzzer-beating trey gave KSU a 32-28 advantage at the break.

Kansas State shot 43.6 percent from the field while holding Baylor to a 38.5 percent clip...Baylor's Perry Jones III fouled out with 5:05 remaining....In 25 meetings in the all-time series, the Wildcats lead 14-11...The teams split their season series. Baylor won 75-73 at Kansas State on January 10.
