Saint Louis downs Massachusetts for A-10 title

Mar 10, 2014 - 12:22 AM Amherst, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordair Jett drove to the right of the lane through three defenders to put through the game-winning layup with 3.4 seconds to play as No. 17 Saint Louis took a 64-62 win over Massachusetts on Sunday to win the Atlantic 10 regular-season title.

Jett netted 17, Dwayne Evans and Mike McCall Jr. added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Billikens (26-5, 13-3 A-10), who captured the regular-season crown outright for the second year in a row.

"I couldn't be happier for these guys - what they have done is extraordinary, winning the A-10 regular season last year, then the A-10 Championship, and now this today," SLU head coach Jim Crews said. "We had guys make big plays throughout game today. We had good options there on the last play. Everyone did their part."

Chaz Williams tallied 20 points and nine assists for the Minutemen (23-7, 10-6), who lost two of their last three regular season games. Derrick Gordon added 15 points in the setback.

Jett made a layup with just over a minute to play to tie the game, 62-62. Trey Davis then missed a jumper for UMass, however, Gordon gained the offensive board.

UMass' Cady Lalanne then went up for a layup with 36 seconds left but was blocked by Rob Loe on the attempt, which was ruled a jump ball with the possession arrow in favor of Saint Louis.

The Billikens held for the last shot and Jett drove for the decisive layup.

UMass led 35-33 following a first half that featured nine lead changes and four ties.

Holding a 51-49 lead, the Minutemen used a 5-0 spurt to build a 56-49 margin with 5:48 remaining.

The Billikens rattled off the next seven and knotted the game at 56 apiece with just over three to play.
