Indiana hands No. 3 Wisconsin first loss

Jan 15, 2014 - 3:58 AM Bloomington, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Yogi Ferrell netted 25 points to help Indiana hand No. 3 Wisconsin its first loss of the season, a 75-72 decision at Assembly Hall.

Ferrell scored five straight points late to break a 65-65 tie. Wisconsin made it a one-point game in the final minute on Frank Kaminsky's layup before Ferrell potted a pair of free throws with 18.1 seconds remaining.

Out of a timeout, Traevon Jackson and Ben Brust missed 3-pointers and Stanford Robinson corralled the final rebound for the Hoosiers (12-5, 2-2 Big Ten) before running out the clock.

Robinson and Will Sheehey scored 13 points apiece for IU, which had lost 12 straight against the Badgers (16-1, 3-1). Indiana has never lost 13 in a row to a single opponent.

"It's something we've been working for all season," said Sheehey, when asked about ending the slump against Wisconsin.

Jackson led Wisconsin with a career-best 21 points. Brust scored 13, Josh Gasser and Kaminsky had 11 apiece and Sam Dekker chipped in 10 points.

The loss left Arizona, Syracuse and Wichita State as the lone unbeaten teams in the country.

"It was very important we get to the basket," said Indiana head coach Tom Crean. "We need to get in the lane whether it's through the post or the drive."

Noah Vonleh hit a pair of 3s to put Indiana in front 10-9 early on but Wisconsin made its first seven shots, including five layups from four different players, and led 16-10 at the first media timeout.

The lead grew to 18-10 before the Hoosiers ran off eight straight to knot it at 18. Gasser's running layup near the midway point in the period broke the spell for the Badgers and sparked a 7-2 run.

Wisconsin held a slim edge for the remainder of the first half and led 35-34 at the break.

Jackson, who spent much of the first half on the bench with foul trouble, scored the Badgers' first nine points of the second and added another layup after a Brust 3-pointer. Dekker then potted a 3 for the lone double digit lead of the contest at 13:28.

With the home crowd behind them, the Hoosiers fought back with a 12-0 charge, capped by consecutive Vonleh layups. His tip-in at 9:39 tied the score at 52- apiece and his short jump hook in the lane gave Indiana the lead.

"I think our guys were worrying about fouls," said Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. "The way it was being called, our guys became so tentative. It really surprised me that our guys were not playing the way we normally play."

The two teams traded baskets down the stretch until Ferrell's triple with 2:53 left put Indiana on top for good.
