Carter leads Wichita State past NC Central

Dec 23, 2013 - 3:24 AM Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Darius Carter scored a career-high 19 points to help the 11th-ranked Wichita State Shockers stay unbeaten with a 77-66 win over NC Central from Charles Koch Arena.

Cleanthony Early totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds for Wichita State (12-0), which is off to its best start in school history. Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet netted 15 and 14 points, respectively, with VanVleet adding eight assists.

The loss spoiled a career-best 37 points from NC Central senior Jeremy Ingram, who shot 7-of-13 from beyond the arc. Emanuel Chapman had nine assists in the setback for the Eagles (7-3).

Early and Carter combined to score the first 16 points for Wichita State. Leading 16-14, VanVleet then canned a 3 and Baker scored five straight, but the Eagles kept it tight at 24-19.

The Shockers began to pull away late in the first half, when Baker's triple sparked a 15-0 run. WSU led comfortably by 16 points at halftime.

Ingram converted a four-point play which Alfonzo Houston followed with a layup to open the second half and pull NC Central within 10 points at 40-30.

Ingram went on to score 27 in the second half, but it wasn't enough.

Game Notes

Wichita State has a week off before hosting Davidson on Dec. 29 ... The Shockers won the rebounding margin 37-22 and improved to 89-16 when outrebounding opponents under coach Gregg Marshall.
