Wichita State blasts Bradley to remain unbeaten
Jan 15, 2014 - 6:31 AM Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Fred VanVleet dropped a game-high 22 points to lead No. 5 Wichita State to a 72-50 rout of Bradley on Tuesday.VanVleet shot 7-for-10 from the floor and made both of his 3-point tries as Wichita State (18-0, 5-0 MVC) matched its best start in conference play since the 1964-65 season. The Shockers were already off to the best start overall in program history.
"I thought we were active in our pressure," Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall said. "The deflections and steals got them to play faster than they wanted to."
Darius Carter added 11 points in the triumph while Wichita's two leading scorers, Cleanthony Early and Ron Baker, combined for just 13 on 4-of-11 shooting.
Walt Lemon, Jr. paced Bradley (6-12, 1-4) with 12 points in the setback.
Midway through the first half, the Braves were within 15-14 after Omari Grier's 3-pointer. Wichita took control with a 10-0 spurt, highlighted by Baker's lone 3-pointer of the contest.
VanVleet scored the next seven Shockers points for a 32-18 edge. Moments later, Derail Green hit 3-pointers on the front and back ends of a personal 8-0 run which left the Shockers ahead 40-20. Lemon scored the final three points of the period, but Wichita State still led comfortably 40-23.
"He's the best point guard in the league," Bradley head coach Geno Ford said of VanVleet. "I'm not sure there's three better in the country."
The result was never in doubt, as the Shockers scored the first seven points of the second half and led by as many as 32 points before resting their starters.
With No. 3 Wisconsin losing at Indiana earlier, Wichita State is now one of just three unbeaten programs in the nation.
