Louisville beats Minnesota in battle of Pitinos

Nov 15, 2014 - 1:32 PM Aguadilla, PR (SportsNetwork.com) - Montrezl Harrell helped Rick Pitino get the best of his son again.

Harrell had a career-high 30 points to go with seven rebounds as No. 8 Louisville defeated Minnesota 81-68 in the third annual Armed Forces Classic on Friday night.

The lone other meeting between the Pitinos came in 2012, the younger Richard Pitino's only year at Florida International. Louisville won that encounter 79-55.

Terry Rozier posted 18 points, six boards, four assists and four steals, while Chris Jones added 13 points and three steals for the Cardinals (1-0), who lost to Kentucky in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last season.

Louisville is playing in its third conference in three seasons. It played its final season in the Big East during the 2012-13 campaign and was in the American Athletic Conference last season.

Andre Hollins netted 22 points to lead Minnesota (0-1), which won the NIT last season.

Louisville trailed 14-10 before seizing control with a 19-2 run.

Harrell had nine points during the surge, including a 3-pointer to cap it and give the Cardinals a 29-16 advantage with 6:38 to go in the opening half.

Louisville led 43-30 at the break and took its largest lead after Wayne Blackshear knocked down a triple for a 52-32 spread at the 16:53 mark of the second half.

Deandre Mathieu and Hollins helped Minnesota respond, hitting threes during an 8-0 spurt to get Minnesota within 12. The Cardinals counter-punched back, though, as Harrell sandwiched buckets around a Rozier dunk to put them up 58-40 with 14:06 to play.

Minnesota never got within less than 10 the rest of the way.

Game Notes

The Cardinals are the only team in the country with at least 30 wins in each of their last three seasons ... Louisville forced 11 steals and shot 46 percent (23-of-50) from the floor.
