McKay's big night lifts Iowa State past Oklahoma State
Feb 19, 2015 - 6:13 AM Stillwater, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Jameel McKay recorded his first career double-double as No. 14 Iowa State defeated 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State, 70-65, on Wednesday night.McKay tied a career high with 17 points to go along with 14 rebounds, while Dustin Hogue contributed 14 points with seven rebounds and Monte Morris added 11 points in the win.
The Cyclones (19-6, 9-4 Big 12) pulled one game back of conference-leading Kansas in snapping a four-game road losing streak.
Le'Bryan Nash and Phil Forte each scored 13 points, while Jeff Newberry and Anthony Hickey supplied 12 points apiece for the Cowboys (17-9, 7-7).
"We just got out-toughed, plain and simple," Cowboys coach Travis Ford said.
Iowa State held a one-point lead after a pair of free throws from Morris at the five-minute mark of the second half. Nash then hit two jumpers as part of five straight points for the Cowboys as they grabbed a 65-61 edge.
Goerges Niang followed with a tip-in before Hogue's 3-pointer pushed the Cyclones back in front with 1:17 remaining. They would not trail the rest of the way.
Niang made it 68-65 on a tough, driving layup with 20.9 seconds on the clock.
Newberry then missed from beyond the arc on Oklahoma State's ensuing possession, and McKay buried both free throws to seal the win.
"I thought we played with great poise in those last couple of minutes," Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg said. "We went down four, had a good play, made a good basket and then had a stop."
Niang's 3-pointer started a 7-0 burst for the Cyclones that helped them to a 40-34 lead early in the second.
Forte hit a triple that was the initial basket of a 9-1 run that put the Cowboys up 51-47. However, another 7-0 run from Iowa State kept the momentum swinging as it regained a three-point edge.
Oklahoma State went nearly four minutes without a basket midway through the first half as the Cyclones took a 20-14 in the process. Forte ended the drought with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit in half, but Naz Long's trey moments later gave Iowa State a seven-point advantage.
The Cowboys hung around, however, with Forte's two free throws following a Hickey 3-pointer that tied the game at 33-33 entering halftime.
