Wisconsin completes season sweep of Iowa
Jan 31, 2015 - 10:35 PM Iowa City, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Frank Kaminsky scored 24 points and Nigel Hayes added 14, leading fifth-ranked Wisconsin to a 74-63 victory over Iowa on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.Josh Gasser and Sam Dekker each chipped in 11 for the Badgers (19-2, 7-1 Big Ten), who have won four straight since a stunning loss at Rutgers on Jan. 11. Kaminsky, who missed the game against the Scarlet Knights because of a concussion, also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds on Saturday while making half of his field goal attempts and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.
Wisconsin has won 12 of its last 13, including a season sweep of Iowa. The Badgers rolled to an 82-50 rout of the Hawkeyes just 11 days ago in Madison and have won five straight in the series.
"I've always thought we played well away from home because of our attention to detail," said Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan about his team's 6-1 road record. "For us to get back-to-back (wins) at Michigan and Iowa is huge."
Aaron White scored 15 to lead Iowa (13-8, 4-4), which has lost three in a row. White had played just seven minutes in last week's loss to Purdue because of a stinger.
Gabriel Olaseni contributed 12 points for the Hawkeyes, who shot just 30.4 percent in the second half after a 64 percent effort in the opening 20 minutes.
Neither team led by more than three in the first half until an 11-3 run gave Wisconsin a 28-20 edge with just over nine minutes to play. Dekker scored the last four of that burst, but Iowa did not wilt and pulled within 32-30 a few minutes later after a 3-pointer by Peter Jok.
Gasser followed with a three-point play for the Badgers, who then carried a 42-36 advantage to the break. A trey by Kaminsky to open the second half and a layup from Bronson Koenig extended the margin to 11.
The Hawkeyes got as close as five on a free throw by Olaseni, but it came during an Iowa field goal drought of nearly six minutes. Mike Gesell's layup with 9 1/2 minutes remaining ended the dry spell, but Gasser followed with a contested 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down to extend the Wisconsin lead back to 11 at 58-47.
"We kept plugging defensively," said Ryan. "I'd like to say we were playing good defense to get it back, but they had some shots that just didn't go down, that do go down at times."
Iowa got only as close as eight from there and trailed by as many as 15 down the stretch.
Wisconsin held a 35-24 advantage on the boards and finished with 15 offensive rebounds.
"If you're going to look at one thing that was the difference in the game, it was offensive rebounding," said Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. "Normally if they make seven 3s, you've got a shot, but not if you look (at the box score) and see 35-24 (rebounding), 15-7 (offensive rebounding). That's a recipe for disaster."
