Texas Tech upsets Gonzaga in Great Alaska Shootout
Nov 24, 2007 - 9:10 AM ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Ticker) -- Alan Voskuil scored 28 points to lead Texas Tech to a 73-63 upset over 14th-ranked Gonzaga on Friday night in the semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout.D'Walyn Roberts scored seven of his 11 points in the final six minutes of the first half as the Red Raiders put together a 17-5 run to take a 10-point lead into the locker room.
Charlie Burgess also scored seven points during the run for Texas Tech (4-1), which will face No. 23 Butler in the tournament final on Saturday.
After Roberts hit a pair of free throws to give Texas Tech a one-point lead, Burgess scored the next seven points, finishing with 11 for the game.
Voskuil followed Burgess' streak by hitting one of his five 3-pointers to put the Red Raiders up, 36-28, forcing Gonzaga to take a timeout.
Micah Downs, who led the Bulldogs with 15 points, hit a layup following the timeout, narrowing Texas Tech's lead to six. However, Gonzaga had no answer for Roberts, who ended the half with five straight points - including a tip-in at the buzzer.
Texas Tech asserted its authority on the glass, outrebounding Gonzaga 22-11 in the first half.
The Red Raiders kept the momentum going, scoring the first seven points of the second half to open a 48-31 lead and never let Gonzaga get closer than six points.
Gonzaga turned the ball over seven times on its first eight possessions in the second half, allowing Texas Tech to build a big lead which it never overcame.
The Bulldogs (4-1) struggled to find their shooting touch during the game, connecting on just 40 percent from the field while making just 6-of-17 shots from 3-point range.
Texas Tech made its final four free throws of the game to cement the victory and finished 15-of-21 at the foul line.
