Green leads Butler over Virginia Tech in overtime

Nov 24, 2007 - 7:33 AM ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Ticker) -- Mike Green scored 12 of his 23 points in overtime and Pete Campbell added 26 points as No. 23 Butler edged Virginia Tech, 84-78, in the Great Alaskan Shootout on Friday at the Sullivan Arena.

Green and Campbell accounted for all 16 of the Bulldogs' points in the extra session. Green got Butler to a great start in overtime, knocking down a jump shot and a pair of free throws in the first 79 seconds for a 72-68 edge.

After Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney hit a jump shot, Campbell and Green made consecutive 3-pointers to give Butler a 78-70 lead with 2:47 remaining.

The Hokies (2-1) tried to battle back as A.D. Vassallo hit two 3-pointers to close the gap to 81-78, but Green made three free throws down the stretch to provide the final margin.

Butler (5-0) jumped out to its biggest lead of the night when Green and Campbell knocked down back-to-back shots from the arc to extend its advantage to 61-52.

Green shot 9-of-15 from the field and Campbell hit seven 3-pointers for the Bulldogs, who shot 47 percent (28-of-60) on the night and committed just 10 turnovers.

Trailing for most of the night, Virginia Tech freshman Jeff Allen hit a pair of jump shots in the final 68 seconds to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Allen scored 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds while Vassallo had 19 points and four assists for the Hokies, who trailed, 30-28, at the half.

Butler advanced to the finals of the tournament to play Texas Tech, which defeated 14th-ranked Gonzaga on Friday.
