Wright, hot-shooting Georgetown crush American
Dec 6, 2008 - 11:30 PM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- John Thompson III apparently is a tough man to please.Chris Wright scored 22 points and No. 18 Georgetown dominated defensively in a 73-49 victory over American on Saturday.
Jessie Sapp and DaJuan Summers each scored 14 points for the Hoyas (5-1), who demolished in-state rival Maryland, 75-48, last Sunday and showed no mercy to the Eagles. Georgetown shot a blistering 58 percent (24-of-41) and connected on 10-of-20 3-point attempts.
The Hoyas held the Eagles to 12 first-half points - the lowest total since Thompson became coach in 2004 - but he still found something to complain about.
"It's hard to come out of a half where they scored 12 points and be upset," He said. "But I was."
American (4-4), which is located three miles down the road in Washington, D.C., was held without a field goal for the first five-plus minutes and turned the ball over seven times in that span.
Georgetown took advantage by opening the game on a 13-0 run, and held a commanding 40-12 lead at halftime. Wright and Sapp each scored 11 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Despite the terrific showings on both sides of the ball, Thompson still maintained he was not satisfied.
"Regardless of what the numbers were, regardless of what the score is, I'm a little disappointed in how we played today," he said.
Derrick Mercer and Garrison Carr had nine points each for the Eagles, who turned the ball over 19 times and shot just 34 percent (18-of-53).
"They're so long. They're athletic. Aggressive. They anticipate very well," American coach Jeff Jones said. "It's not just that they're good athletes. They're coached to know when situations are there for them to gamble. They're not just running around with no ideas."
"We're not playing as a team as well as we're capable of," Carr said. "We have to figure out what it is."
