Davis stars as LSU coasts past Wright State

Dec 28, 2006 - 6:34 AM BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- LSU's new-found inside-outside combination is providing plenty of trouble for opponents.

Glen "Big Baby" Davis scored 26 points and hauled in 13 rebounds to power No. 19 LSU to a 71-45 victory over Wright State in the Hispanic College Fund Classic.

The powerful inside game of Davis was complemented by the shooting of transfer Terry Martin, who hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.

"That was as good as I have felt since the Texas A&M game," LSU coach John Brady said. "We approached the game unselfishly, and I think when you are unselfish on offense, you are better at getting balls in the basket. We had 19 assists and 28 field goals, and that is pretty good."

Davis had 12 points in the opening half, hitting three shots from the arc, but LSU (8-3) led by only a 36-28 margin at halftime. Much of that was due to the fact Wright State did not have a turnover in the opening 20 minutes.

"I thought we executed our offense pretty well," Raiders coach Brad Brownell said. "We really took care of the ball. We had no turnovers in the first half, which is outstanding. We played some pretty good basketball.

"They just made a lot of tough shots and outside shots. Most of them were contested. That is why they are a very good team."

After the teams traded baskets early in the second half, the Tigers went on a 20-2 run to break open the game.

Dameon Mason scored nine of his 14 points in the spurt and Martin buried two from the arc to help extend the lead to 60-34 with 11 minutes to play.

"I thought Dameon played well and I was proud of him," Brady said. "I hope his performance tonight is an indication that, whether it is Dameon, Garrett (Temple) or Tasmin (Mitchell), one of our perimeter guys will step up and score some baskets. If any one of those guys can step up and we continue to have the consistency of Terry Martin, then I think that will really help us offensively."

Davis finished 10-of-13 from the floor in tying his season high and helping LSU shoot 56 percent (28-of-50). The Tigers also hit 9-of-19 from the arc.

In just his third game since transferring from Texas Tech, Martin shot 5-of-8. He made five 3-pointers in the Tigers' win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

Dashaun Wood scored 17 points for Wright State (5-6), but 15 came in the first half.

"In the second half, we held them to 17 points," Brady said. "Our only adjustment in the second half on defense was to switch everyone to Dashaun Wood. If he ever received a ball screen, then we were going to double-team him. It seemed to slow him down, and after we got a pretty big lead, it seemed he wasn't as quick as he was early on in the game."
