Marquette tunes up for conference play vs. Savannah State

Dec 30, 2006 - 4:15 PM Savannah St (6-11) at No. 22 Marquette (12-2) 2:00 pm EST

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Marquette will look to cruise into conference play with another easy victory.

The 22nd-ranked Golden Eagles will take on Savannah State in their last game before the start of the Big East Conference.

Last season, the Golden Eagles surprised many conference foes by posting 10 wins after being picked to finish near the bottom of the league by many preseason pundits. However, this season, Big East opponents will see Marquette coming as it has won 12 of its first 14 contests to start the campaign.

Marquette will be playing the finale of a eight-game homestand. The Golden Eagles are 5-2 during the string, with a surprising loss to North Dakota State on December 2 and a defeat to then-No. 4 Wisconsin a week later.

They have won three straight contests since. In its last contest, Jerel McNeal scored a career-high 25 points in a 77-57 victory over Morgan State on December 22.

After being routed by West Virginia and Louisville, the Tigers are playing their third Big East opponent this month. Savannah State started 5-0 this season but has dropped 11 of its last 12 games since the stellar start.

Marquette routed the Tigers during the 2003-04 season in the lone meeting between the schools.
