Radenovic, Williams help Arizona turn back Stanford
Dec 30, 2006 - 10:53 PM TUCSON, Arizona (Ticker) -- The "Big Three" for Arizona proved to be too much for the Lopez twins.Sparked by Marcus Williams, Ivan Radenovic and Mustafa Shakur, No. 7 Arizona pulled away for an 89-75 Pac-10 Conference victory over pesky Stanford.
Williams scored 23 points, Radenovic 22 and Shakur had 13 of his 18 in the second half for Arizona (11-1, 2-0 Pac-10), which extended its winning streak to 11 games by overcoming big efforts from Brook and Robin Lopez.
Holding just a 70-69 lead after Brook Lopez threw down a dunk with 4:47 remaining, the Wildcats showed their grit down the stretch.
Radenovic converted a layup and made two free throws and Williams, who battled foul trouble in the second half, sank a jumper with 3:21 left, giving the Wildcats a 76-69 cushion. They led by at least five points the rest of the way.
In their latest win, the high-powered Wildcats shot 60 percent (30-of-49) and made 8-of-10 3-pointers.
Brook Lopez scored 17 points and Robin Lopez contributed 14 for the Cardinal (8-3, 1-1 Pac-10), who lost for the first time in three road games this season.
"Their (Stanford's) two big guys caused a lot of problems inside," Arizona coach Lute Olson said.
Lawrence Hill led the way with 20 points for Stanford, which shot 45 percent (32-of-71) and held a 36-27 rebounding advantage.
Powered by the Lopezes, the Cardinal used an 18-6 surge to open the second half to take a 61-56 lead. Robin Lopez's follow shot with 12:44 remaining capped the spurt.
"We played well together," Robin Lopez said. "We executed well and we were confident. Both of us played well."
"It felt natural playing with him," Brook Lopez said. "I have played with him forever."
Shakur scored seven straight points as the Wildcats answered with an 11-0 run to move in front for good.
"I felt good about today's game," said Shakur, who made 6-of-8 shots and also handed out nine assists. "We had a test and showed that we can't come out flat."
"Mustafa continues to amaze me," Olson said. "He is doing exactly what he needs to do to get to the next level."
Williams scored 17 points and the Wildcats went 7-of-8 from the arc in the first half en route to building a 50-43 lead at the break.
"Stanford ran a little bit, but didn't play the typical slow offense we expected," Williams said.
