No. 21 Marquette faces Providence in Big East opener

Jan 4, 2007 - 4:49 PM No. 21 Marquette (13-2) at Providence (10-3) 7:30 pm EST

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (Ticker) -- After a terrific stretch against non-conference foes, Marquette is ready to take aim at Big East opponents.

The 21st-ranked Golden Eagles look for their fifth consecutive victory and 14th in 16 contests Thursday when they open their conference schedule against Providence.

Marquette has been sparked by sophomore Wesley Matthews, who scored a career-high 22 points and tied a season-best with nine rebounds in Saturday's 69-51 win over Savannah State.

Matthews is the team's third-leading scorer (11.6), trailing Dominic James (17.0) - who also scored 22 points against Savannah State - and Jerel McNeal (14.6).

Providence has won four of its last five contests and is 10-1 at home. The Friars set a school record with 66 points in the second half of Tuesday's 107-69 triumph over Longwood.

Jonathan Kale scored 18 points to lead six players in double figures.

Providence's leading scorer Sharaud Curry (17.3) has missed the past two games for violating team rules.
