Stanford continues home dominance over Washington

Jan 12, 2007 - 8:28 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Stanford again showed why it's a torture chamber for Washington to visit.

Anthony Goods scored 19 points as the Cardinal rallied for a 78-77 Pac-10 Conference victory over the 24th-ranked Huskies.

Stanford's defense rattled Washington, which starts three freshmen and a sophomore, limiting the Huskies to two field goals in the final 5 1/2 minutes.

That added up to the 14th consecutive loss for Washington at Maples Pavilion dating to January 1993.

To that point, the Huskies played superbly in the second half, erasing a seven-point deficit with an 18-6 run to surge ahead, 56-51, with 13:07 left on a layup by Jon Brockman, who had 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Stanford neutralized Washington's 7-foot freshman center Spencer Hawes, limiting him to six points and eight rebounds. Much of that was due to 7-foot freshman twins Robin and Brook Lopez, who combined for 29 points and seven blocks.

After taking a 71-66 lead on Justin Dentmon's coast-to-coast layup with 5:33 to play, the Huskies (11-5, 1-4 Pac-10) went over four minutes without a field goal.

Dentmon finally broke the drought, converting a three-point play for a 74-72 lead with 1:14 left, but Lawrence Hill turned in the play of the game to rescue Stanford.

After Hawes had corralled a loose ball along the baseline, Hill slapped it away and then hit a jumper in the lane, drawing Hawes' fifth foul in the process. Hill made the foul shot to give the Cardinal (10-4, 2-2) a 75-74 advantage with 40 seconds to go.

Freshman Quincy Pondexter split a pair of free throws to pull Washington even with 29 seconds left, but Huskies guard Ryan Appleby inexplicably fouled Goods in the backcourt on the inbounds play.

Goods buried both free throws for a 77-75 lead with 27 seconds left and a steal by Fred Washington led to a single foul shot by Taj Finger with eight ticks remaining.

A last-second 3-point attempt by Phil Nelson was well short and Brockman could do nothing but lay it in at the buzzer.

Hill scored 18 points and Robin Lopez added a season-high 17 for the Cardinal, who shot 53 percent (30-of-57).

Dentmon scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half for the Huskies, who dropped their third straight league road game.
