North Carolina faces Virginia Tech, aims for 13th straight win

Jan 13, 2007 - 3:49 PM No. 1 North Carolina (15-1) at Virginia Tech (12-4) 3:30 pm EST

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) - Playing its best basketball of the season, North Carolina will have to be on top of its game against a pesky conference foe.

The top-ranked Tar Heels aim for their 13th straight victory against Virginia Tech in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on Saturday.

North Carolina (15-1, 2-0 ACC) hasn't lost since falling to Gonzaga in the NIT Season Tip-Off on November 22. The Tar Heels were sluggish in their last contest, but they have used their quickness to outscore their opponents by an average of 24 points per game this season.

North Carolina extended its winning streak to 12 games with a 79-69 victory over Virginia on Wednesday. Tyler Hansbrough scored 18 points and freshman Brandan Wright added 16.

The victory over the Cavaliers came three days after a win over Florida State in the conference opener - the first ACC matchup for the Tar Heels' heralded freshman class.

The Hokies (12-4, 2-0) have won three games in a row. After upsetting then-No. 5 Duke on Saturday, Virginia Tech defeated UNC-Greensboro, 74-51, on Wednesday. Zabian Dowdell scored 17 points against the Spartans.

The Hokies have lost 18 consecutive games vs. North Carolina, and they haven't defeated a No. 1 team since 1983.
