Stanford clips Washington State in overtime

Jan 14, 2007 - 5:51 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Stanford's getting pretty good at producing nail-biting wins.

Anthony Goods hit a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds to play in overtime to lift Stanford to a 71-68 Pac-10 Conference victory over No. 23 Washington State.

The Cardinal (11-4, 3-2 Pac-10) completed a sweep of the two Washington schools with its third straight thrilling finish. Stanford beat No. 24 Washington by a point Thursday night and defeated Virginia by the same margin on Sunday.

Goods shot 11-of-16 to match his career high of 30 points, including six in overtime, as the Cardinal snapped the Cougars' four-game winning streak and knocked them out of first place in the league.

"We're pleased with the way we fought back," Washington State coach Tony Bennett said. "We battled as hard as we could. The kid (Goods) hit a tough shot at the end."

The Cardinals looked like they were headed for a comfortable finish after a 7-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Goods, forged a 59-50 lead with 2:56 left in regulation.

Daven Harmeling revived the Cougars (15-3, 4-2) with back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 60-56 and Ivory Clark scored twice down low, including a dunk to tie it at 60-60.

Goods airballed a winning attempt from the arc to send the game into overtime.

With the Cardinal trailing, 66-63, Lawrence Hill hit his second basket of the extra session, a 3-pointer that tied it with 1:49 left.

Stanford went ahead for the first time in OT when Goods scored on a tough jumper from the right side for a 68-66 lead, but Clark converted a follow shot to tie it with 35 seconds left.

"We're going to be in a lot of games like this and we have been," Bennett said. "We've finished some games, but today we just didn't have enough today.

Brook Lopez had eight points and 10 rebounds and twin brother Robin Lopez chipped in with eight boards as Stanford enjoyed a 45-36 edge on the glass.

The Huskies were led by Clark and Derrick Lowe with 16 points apiece and Kyle Weaver, who registered the first triple-double in school history with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

Weaver also became the first Cougar to record three straight double-doubles since Carlos Daniel in 1998.
