Texas A&M uses late run to rout Colorado

Jan 14, 2007 - 4:47 AM BOULDER, Colorado (Ticker) -- Acie Law IV and Texas A&M came alive at the right time.

Law scored five of his 21 points during a decisive second-half run as the ninth-ranked Aggies pulled away for an 87-69 Big 12 Conference victory over Colorado.

Josh Carter added six of his 19 points during a 19-3 burst that turned a one-point edge for the Aggies into a 76-59 advantage with 3:28 remaining.

Joseph Jones finished with 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for Texas A&M (15-2, 3-0 Big 12), which posted its eighth straight win and beat Colorado for the fourth consecutive time in the series.

The Aggies, who are off to their best start since opening 16-2 in 1959-60, won their first three league games for the first time since 1993-94, when they were a part of the Southwest Conference.

Not known as a strong offensive team, the Aggies made the most of their possessions, shooting 54 percent (30-of-56) from the floor, including 8-of-14 3-pointers.

More of a defensive unit, Texas A&M had been the only team in the country to not allow 65 points in any game. Although that standing did come to an end, it did hold Colorado (4-9, 0-3) to 38 percent (23-of-60) shooting.

Buffaloes leading scorer Richard Roby was held to eight points below his 19.1 average on 4-of-15 from the field.

Jones, who posted his second straight double-double and is averaging 14.6 points and 9.8 rebounds over the last five games, scored a team-best 12 in the first half to lift the Aggies to a 42-36 lead at the break.

The Buffaloes scored six of the first eight points of the second half, closing within 44-42 on a layup by Xavier Silas with 17:21 remaining. Although the Aggies quickly built the lead back up to six, Colorado did not go away, closing with a point at 49-48 on two free throws by Dominique Coleman with 14:21 to go.

The Buffaloes would close within a point on three more occasions without taking the lead, including 57-56 on a layup by Coleman with 9:42 left. However, they would then be outscored, 30-13, over the final nine-plus minutes.

Coleman finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Colorado, which did more than hold its own on the boards, finishing with 38-36 advantage, including 15-8 offensive.

Jermyl Jackson-Wilson added 13 points for the Buffaloes, who absorbed their third straight defeat and fifth in the last six games.
