Collison sparks UCLA's win over Arizona State

Jan 19, 2007 - 6:09 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Darren Collison helped prevent UCLA from absorbing an embarrassing defeat.

Collison scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half as the second-ranked Bruins overcame a poor first half for a 60-50 Pac-10 Conference triumph over Arizona State, which remained winless in league play.

Arron Afflalo added 13 points and Josh Shipp 12 after missing a game with a strained right hamstring for the Bruins (16-1, 5-1 Pac-10), who limited the Sun Devils to just 13 points in the second half.

The game was tied, 41-41, before UCLA's Michael Roll nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 9:24 to play. The basket triggered a 9-0 run, with Collison scoring the other six on a four-point play and a fast-break layup.

Christian Polk scored 16 points to pace the Sun Devils (6-12, 0-7), who are in their first season under former North Carolina State coach Herb Sendek.

Freshman Jerren Shipp - Josh's younger brother - had eight points to help Arizona State take a 37-34 halftime lead, but he was blanked after the break.

The Sun Devils connected on 58 percent (14-of-24) from the floor in the first half but were held to just 29 percent (6-of-21) in the second.

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute scored just two points on 1-of-5 shooting but grabbed 14 rebounds for the Bruins, who held a 32-22 advantage on the glass.
