Joseph, Reynolds shoot Virginia past Clemson

Jan 28, 2007 - 8:33 PM CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Clemson cooled off just as Adrian Joseph was heating up and it cost the Tigers dearly.

Joseph came up big in a huge closing run and Virginia rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to post a 64-63 victory over No. 17 Clemson in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.

Clemson (18-4, 4-4 ACC) was up, 34-30, at the break and extended the lead in the second half. The Tigers took a 63-49 lead on a pair of free throws by Trevor Booker with 5:05 to play but that would be their last points of the game.

While the Tigers went cold, Joseph got hot and shot the Cavaliers back into the game. He hit a 3-pointer with 4:04 to play that started a 15-0 closing run and helped Virginia (13-6, 5-2) add an impressive road win to its NCAA Tournament resume.

R.J. Reynolds followed with a 3-pointer and a jumper and Joseph added five quick points on a jumper and 3-pointer to make it 63-62 with 56 seconds left. Joseph scored eight of his 11 points in the spurt and Reynolds finished with 18 points.

Despite the heroics of Joseph and Reynolds, it was Jason Cain who capped the comeback, hitting a jumper with 17 seconds to play to give Virginia a 64-63 lead.

Vernon Hamilton missed a jumper at the other end and Clemson, which only had four team fouls, was unable to send Virginia to the line over the final seconds.

Hamilton scored 16 points for the Tigers, who had dropped four of their last five games after a 17-0 start.
