Stanford stuns UCLA with second-half rally

Jan 29, 2007 - 5:25 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- It took a stunning turnaround for Stanford to produce a stunning upset.

Lawrence Hill scored 22 points and Anthony Goods added 20 as the Cardinals rallied from a 17-point deficit to jolt second-ranked UCLA, 75-68, in a Pac-10 Conference matchup.

Following a first half in which Stanford could do little right, the Cardinal could do no wrong in the second half.

Stanford (14-5, 6-3) shot 70 percent (14-of-20) to erase a 12-point halftime deficit behind Hill and Goods, who each scored 17 points and combined to hit 10-of-11 shots after the intermission.

In snapping UCLA's four-game winning streak and handing the Bruins just their second loss of the season, the Cardinal wrested control of the game with a 15-0 run to forge ahead by eight points with 6 1/2 minutes to play.

How dramatically did the game change? Stanford scored 20 points in the first 19 minutes and then poured in 55 over the next 21 minutes.

The Bruins (18-2, 7-2 Pac-10) toyed with the Cardinal in the opening 20 minutes, building a 37-20 lead as Arron Afflalo scored 17 points while holding Stanford without a field goal for 7 1/2 minutes.

But the Cardinals scored the final five points of the half to make it 37-25, including a 3-pointer by Kenny Brown just before the buzzer that proved to be an omen of things to come.

Goods started the comeback by scoring 10 points, including a 3-pointer with 10:36 left that closed the deficit to 49-44.

UCLA's Josh Shipp made a pair of free throws with 10:20 remaining, but Hill scored seven consecutive points in the decisive surge to put Stanford ahead for good, 56-51. Fred Washington then capped the run with a three-point play for a 59-51 lead with 6:27 left.

The Cardinal built the lead to 70-60 before the Bruins got within 71-66 with a minute to play on 3-pointers by Darren Collison and Afflalo, who managed just five points in the second half and went scoreless for over 13 1/2 minutes.

Hill and Goods finished off the upset with two free throws each, giving Stanford a two-game sweep of Los Angeles teams. The Cardinal beat USC, 65-50, on Thursday.

Freshman center Brook Lopez had seven points and eight rebounds and twin brother Robin added six and six to help Stanford dominate the glass, 40-28.

Collison scored 17 points for UCLA, which shot 35 percent (12-of-34) in the second half after hitting 15-of-29 in the first half.

The shooting woes were mirrored by Affalo, who hit 6-of-7 in the opening 20 minutes before connecting on 2-for-11 the rest of the way.
