Bay helps Colorado upset Oklahoma State

Feb 4, 2007 - 1:56 AM BOULDER, Colorado (Ticker) -- Kal Bay and Colorado were tired of being Big 12 Conference doormats, so they did something about it.

Bay and Dominique Coleman each scored 21 points as the Buffaloes snapped a four-game losing streak with an 89-77 upset of No. 14 Oklahoma State.

Richard Roby scored 20 points and Xavier Silas added nine for Colorado (6-13, 2-7 Big 12), which has beaten Oklahoma State twice in a row after dropping 17 of the previous 23 meetings.

"You don't get too many opportunities to get a ranked team on your home floor, and we just took great advantage of that today," Roby said.

The Buffaloes, who entered the contest with the worst overall and league record among Big 12 teams, posted their first win in three tries vs. ranked foes.

"It's finally good to see our guys step up and I thought they played one terrific defensive game against a very good Oklahoma State team," said Colorado coach Ricardo Patton, whose team allowed an opponent to shoot less than 50 percent for the first time in five games.

Bay matched his season high, shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. He helped Colorado to its second-best scoring output of the season.

"We just focused the entire game and we played hard and together," Bay said. "If we made a mistake, it was no big deal and we just continued to work hard."

"Kal is a trooper," Patton said. "He's a hard-nosed kid, highly competitive and I think his heart is in the right place."

Coleman, who grabbed 15 rebounds, and Roby each connected on 5-of-10 shots for the Buffaloes, who shot 48 percent (26-of-54) overall and outrebounded the Cowboys, 45-35.

"I just have a knack for the ball," Coleman said. "I always just like to go after it and be very aggressive and box out with wide shoulders."

JamesOn Curry scored 20 points and Mario Bogan added 18 and eight boards for Oklahoma State (18-4, 4-3), which fell to 0-3 in conference road games. It was Curry's 13th game of at least 20 points.

"There is no excuse for how we played tonight," Curry said. "We definitely came into this game and took it lightly."

The Cowboys shot just 39 percent (26-of-67) and fell to 16-31 all-time here.

"We talked every day about how important this game was," Oklahoma State coach Sean Sutton said. "We knew if we didn't play well, we were going to lose. Our team has to show toughness on the road. Our past teams have shown it and we need to learn how."
