Oklahoma extends Oklahoma State's road slide

Feb 8, 2007 - 6:52 AM NORMAN, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- Nate Carter and Oklahoma were not about to let Oklahoma State feel at home.

Carter scored 18 points and Oklahoma won its third straight with a 67-60 victory over No. 17 Oklahoma State in a Big 12 Conference matchups.

Carter came up big down the stretch while Oklahoma State came away with yet another road loss. The Cowboys (18-5, 4-4 Big 12) have not won a road game this season and has now lost seven straight away from home in conference play.

"We have to compete harder. I think we can play better and harder in some situations," Oklahoma State coach Sean Sutton said. "We have to be smarter and win on the road, and that is the bottom line."

Oklahoma was up, 30-20, at the break and took a 59-50 lead with 4 1/2 minutes to play on a jumper by Longar Longar. Oklahoma State climbed back to within 59-56 on a jumper by JamesOn Curry, a follow shot by Mario Boggan and an offensive rebound and layup by David Monds.

"Every game, no matter if it is in the first half, home or away, we come out and get a deficit," Curry said. "This team does not have the depth to get a deficit and be battling back the whole entire game. We need to come out and put 40 minutes together."

Terrel Harris missed two free throws with 2:47 remaining to stall the Cowboy comeback and Carter came through for the Sooners. He scored on a layup and made two free throws to push the lead back to 63-56 with 54 seconds to go. He added an offensive rebound and a basket to ice the game.

"I'm proud of our team. I thought we did some good things down the stretch," Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel said. "We kept our composure and guys were getting to the line and making free throws."

Longar scored 13 points and added four blocks and Austin Johnson had 10 points for Oklahoma, which jumped ahead of Oklahoma State in the conference standings.

"We just tried to execute and take the game over in the final five minutes," Carter said. "Every good team makes a run at the end of the game. We just had to weather it and continue to play smart and play good defense."

Boggan scored 19 points and Curry added 17 for Oklahoma State.

The Sooners (14-8, 5-4) have won three straight following a two-game losing streak and avenged a 66-61 loss at Oklahoma State on January 22.

"It's really fun to coach these guys right now," Capel said. "There's a sense of urgency with how we're playing."
