Wichita State's defense turns back Drake 61-38

Jan 2, 2010 - 3:25 AM WICHITA, Kan.(AP) -- Toure Murry scored 11 points and helped lead a stout defensive effort that sent Wichita State past Drake 61-38 on Friday night.

Wichita State (12-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley) blocked nine shots and held Drake to 2-of-22 shooting from the 3-point line.

Drake (5-9, 0-2) was led by Josh Young's nine points.

The Bulldogs cut a seven-point halftime deficit to 32-29, but Wichita State followed with the decisive 15-4 run. David Kyles had two layups during the stretch, while Gabe Blair and Garrett Stutz added big blocks that led to baskets.

Demetric Williams' 3-pointer capped the run, giving Wichita State a 47-33 lead midway through the second half.

Wichita State's rebounding sparked an 11-5 first-half run. It included two 3-pointers from Graham Hatch, who matched his season average of eight points in the first half. The Shockers led 27-20 at halftime.
