Memphis routs Tulane for 13th straight win

Feb 11, 2007 - 5:39 AM MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Memphis is making it look too easy, especially on its home floor.

Freshman Willie Kemp and Robert Dozier scored 13 points apiece as the 10th-ranked Tigers won their 13th consecutive game, battering Tulane, 91-50, in a Conference USA contest.

Memphis (20-3, 11-0 C-USA) improved to 14-0 at home this season and extended its winning streak at FedEx Forum to 26 in a row, the fourth-longest streak in the nation.

During the Tigers' current 13-game run, they have won every contest by double figures with the exception of a 67-64 victory over Southern Miss on January 27.

"Well, we played pretty good," Memphis coach John Calipari said. "Sometimes you get up 30 and you don't want to do anything, but I'm worried about my team playing a full game. I thought we did. I even liked those last four minutes when we put those guys in a 2-3 zone and said, 'Play.'"

Memphis put Tulane (11-10, 4-6) away early, using a 13-0 run to take a 35-13 lead with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first half.

In beating the Green Wave for the 12th straight time, the Tigers carried a 51-29 lead into halftime and kept pouring in on after the break, eventually pushing the margin to 53 points.

Memphis made 14 steals and forced 20 turnovers by Tulane.

"We were playing our best basketball before this game," Green Wave coach Dave Dickerson said. "We came in here winning three of four games, averaging 81 points per game and still having one of the best defenses in the conference. We ran into a team that was better and had better players."

Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 12 points and Jeremy Hunt 11 for Memphis, which shot 51 percent (31-of-61) from the floor. The Tigers also were 9-of-17 from the arc, with six different players connecting.

Chris Moore was the only player in double figures for Tulane, scoring 10 points as the Green Wave shot 31 percent (14-of-45) in losing for the second time in five games.

Dickerson was flustered by the performance of his two leading scorers, David Gomez and Kevin Sims. Gomez took just two shots and collected six points while Sims went scoreless and was 0-of-7 from the floor.

"It's our 21st game of the year," Dickerson said. "You would think that our two leading scorers would come out and play with the mentality of being the leading scorers on the team. I'm a little surprised that they didn't do it. I'm more surprised at the way our team competed tonight."
