Brockman, Hawes lead Washington past UCLA

Mar 4, 2007 - 12:01 AM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Jon Brockman and Spencer Hawes stood tall for Washington against the Pac-10 champs.

Brockman and Hawes each recorded a double-double and the Huskies posted their most impressive win of the season with a 61-51 victory over No. 2 UCLA in a Pac-10 Conference matchup.

Brockman scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Hawes added 13 and 15. Together, Brockman and Hawes combined to nearly outrebound the Bruins, 29-28.

"You have to hand it to Washington, they really took it to us today," UCLA coach Ben Howland said. "They outrebounded us by 15, they defended us to where we only shot 31 percent, and they were outstanding inside. Brockman and Hawes are great players."

"We need to do the best job that we can to take this momentum into next week," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "Jon Brockman and Spencer Hawes were just beasts today. They were twin beasts."

The Huskies (18-12, 8-10 Pac-10) led 31-20 at the half and held on down the stretch. Brockman made four free throws in the final 37 seconds for Washington, which likely needs to win the Pac-10 Tournament to get into the NCAA tournament.

"We knew we were going to need a Herculean effort to come out and be successful against UCLA," Romar said. "They're such a good basketball team. They're very hard to beat. I don't think many teams in the country could beat them."

Josh Shipp scored 13 points and Arron Afflalo added 12 for the Bruins, who had their five-game win streak snapped.

The Bruins (26-4, 15-3) shot 26 percent (8-of-31) in the first half and could never fully recover.

"We were not patient on offense," Howland said. "They were more patient than we were in their half-court offense today. We started off bad with two turnovers and when you're playing a team as good as I think the Huskies are, you have to come out and have good starts."

UCLA had already captured its second straight regular-season conference title with Thursday's 53-45 victory over Washington State.
