Niagara and Florida A&M battle for right to face Kansas
Mar 13, 2007 - 1:44 PM Niagara (22-11) at Florida A&M (21-13) 7:30 pm EDTDAYTON, Ohio (Ticker) -- Niagara and Florida A&M will play for the right to face Big 12 Conference champion Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament West Region.
The opening round game is traditionally played here on Tuesday with the winner advancing to play a top region seed.
Niagara is coming off its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in the last three years. The Purple Eagles lost to third-seeded Oklahoma, 84-67, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2005.
Niagara is led by junior swingman Charron Fisher, who averages 21 points and just under nine rebounds per game.
Calvin Murphy led the 1970 edition of the Purple Eagles to the East Region semifinals.
Florida A&M posted a 58-56 win over Delaware in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament championship. The Rattlers will be making their second appearance in the opening round game. They beat Lehigh, 72-57, in 2004 before falling to Kentucky in the first round.
Senior guard Rome Sanders paces Florida A&M at 15.6 points per game.
Niagara has met the Rattlers one time previously, picking up a win in Tallahassee on December 20, 1998.
