Virginia Commonwealth aims to take down another high seed

Mar 17, 2007 - 2:04 PM Va Commonwealth (28-6) at Pittsburgh (28-7) 5:50 pm EDT

BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) - Virginia Commonwealth looks to add another upset victim to its tournament resume on Saturday.

The 11th seed Rams will try to make it two upset wins in a row when they face off against third-seeded Pittsburgh in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

On Thursday, Eric Maynor drained the game-winning shot with 1.8 seconds to help lift Virginia Commonwealth to a 79-77 triumph over sixth-seeded Duke in the first round.

"I knew when I got it in my hands I was going to try and bring my man down and make a play," Maynor said. "It just happened the way it happened, I'm excited about it."

The Rams (28-6) are trying to follow in the footsteps of Colonial Athletic Association counterpart George Mason, which reach the Final Four last season as an 11-seed.

The Panthers are coming off a 79-58 win over 14th-seeded Wright State in the first round. Ronald Ramon had 14 points and seven rebounds for Pitt (28-7).

Pittsburgh is hoping to avoid the upset bug as it fell to Bradley in the second round last year and to Pacific in the first round NCAAs the season before.
