Gonzaga holds off Marquette in CBE consolation game

Nov 24, 2010 - 3:53 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Steven Gray scored 20 points and Elias Harris added 19 with eight rebounds, as 22nd-ranked Gonzaga held on to beat Marquette, 66-63, in the consolation game of the CBE Classic.

Mangisto Arop finished with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the Bulldogs (3-2), who lost in the semifinals to Kansas State on Monday.

Gonzaga avoided dropping three games in a row for the first time since December 20-31, 2008.

Jimmy Butler contributed a game-high 22 points for the Golden Eagles (4-2), who were beaten by Duke a day earlier. Darius Johnson-Odom tallied 13 points in defeat.

A jumper by Arop put Gonzaga up 59-48 with a little over seven minutes remaining in the game, but Marquette closed the gap to 65-63 on a Butler three-pointer with 43.7 seconds left.

After Gray made 1-of-2 free throws, the Golden Eagles called timeout with 2.5 seconds left to diagram a final play, but Butler's bid from beyond the arc missed the mark.

Marquette led 26-22 in the first half, before Gonzaga ended the opening frame on a 12-2 surge to take a 42-33 advantage into the break.
