Purdue outlasts Virginia Tech in OT

Dec 2, 2010 - 6:55 AM Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - JaJuan Johnson scored a season-high 29 points and E'Twaun Moore added 14, including a couple of key foul shots in the closing seconds of 22nd-ranked Purdue's 58-55 victory over Virginia Tech in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Cassell Coliseum.

Lewis Jackson added five points for the Boilermakers (6-1), who bounced back from their only loss of the season to Richmond on Saturday night to win their first true road game of the season.

Jeff Allen totaled 14 points and nine rebounds while Victor Davila supplied 12 points and six boards for the Hokies (4-3), who have dropped two in a row.

Purdue won for the first time in three all-time meetings with Virginia Tech, which had taken the first two games in December of 1965 and '66.

Johnson hit a pair of free throws to start the scoring in the extra session before Erick Green's three-point play put the Hokies up 54-53 with 3 1/2 minutes remaining.

Lewis Jackson hit one of two at the line to tie the game with 2:06 left prior to Dorenzo Hudson making 1-of-2 at the stripe go give the Hokies a 55-54 edge.

Johnson then drained a jumper with 87 seconds to play to put Purdue back in front for good, 56-55, before Moore hit 1-of-2 at the line to extend the visitors lead to two with 23 ticks to play.

Following a timeout, Malcolm Delaney turned the ball over with 3.3 seconds left. Moore was able to hit the first foul shot before missing the next, and John Hart grabbed the offensive rebound to ensure the victory and run out the clock.

"We have to have more guys making some plays," Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg said. "We have to get guys that are smarter about how to play. They need to be a little bit more selfless, provide a little more leadership. Leadership is not about yourself, it's about doing things for the team every single day so you can hold other people accountable."

Both teams shot poorly, as the Boilermakers made only 21-of-58 for 36.2 percent while the Hokies connected on 19-of-55 for 34.5 percent.

Green's three-pointer from the right wing gave Virginia Tech its first lead at 31-29 with 14:52 to go in the game.

After going back-and-forth, Allen hit 1-of-2 at the line and Davila dropped in a short hook to push the Hokies advantage to 50-46 with 2 1/2 minutes to go.

Moore buried a deep three-pointer to slice the margin to one a minute later before Terrell Bell hit 1-of-2 at the line to increase the hosts' lead to two with 21 ticks left.

A turnaround hook shot by Johnson tied the game with eight seconds left and forced the overtime.

Johnson scored all of Purdue's points in 11-4 run to begin the game before the hosts moved to within 17-16 with 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the half.

Purdue took a 25-21 at the break behind 14 from Johnson.

Purdue is 4-6 all-time in the inter-conference challenge and has won in back- to-back seasons for the first time...The Boilermakers also earned their first road win in the annual event...Purdue is 51-7 when Johnson and Moore both score in double figures...Johnson blocked one shot to reach 200 for his career and joined Joe Barry Carroll as the only Purdue players to reach that plateau. Virginia Tech is 2-4 all-time in this event and 1-2 at home...Delaney ended just 2-of-18 from the floor and committed four turnovers against two assists. The Hokies shot 2-for-14 from three-point territory and have made a triple in 245 straight games...Virginia Tech is 13-6 in overtime under Greenberg, while Purdue is 2-5 in overtime under head coach Matt Painter.
