Holiday's errors allow Stanford to down No. 17 Washington

Jan 14, 2011 - 6:27 AM Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Josh Owens scored the go-ahead basket in the final minute, and Stanford upended No. 17 Washington, 58-56, following Justin Holiday's missed free throws and jumper at the end of regulation.

The Cardinal erased a double-digit deficit in the second half, and led 56-53 following Jeremy Green's 1-for-2 effort at the foul line with 1:23 to go.

Scott Suggs tied it with a three-pointer, but Owens answered with a putback off a Jarrett Mann miss with 29 seconds remaining.

Holiday pulled down Suggs' errant three at the other end, but missed both free throws with 2.5 seconds left. Dwight Powell was whistled for traveling after grabbing second miss to give the Huskies another chance, but Holiday was off the mark on a deep jumper, ending Washington's six-game winning streak.

Owens had 14 points, Green netted 12 and Powell totaled 11 and seven rebounds for the Cardinal (10-5, 3-1 Pac-10), who improved to 8-0 at home and snapped a six-game skid against Washington.

Holiday ended with 15 points and Isaiah Thomas chipped in 14 to go with seven assists for the Huskies (12-4, 4-1), who had won 11 straight Pac-10 games dating back to last season.

A tight first half saw Stanford cling to a 29-28 lead, and it remained close in the early stages of the second stanza.

Holiday scored eight points in less than two minutes to help turn a one-point edge into a 46-38 advantage with a little over 13 minutes left.

The margin reached double-digits, 49-38, following Thomas' three-point play a little later, but Washington made just one field goal over the next seven minutes.

Stanford reeled off 15 of the next 17 points during the drought, taking the lead, 53-51, on Green's three-pointer with under four minutes to go.

Holiday tied it was a jumper, but Powell answered with a layup at the 1:44 mark, leading to the frantic home stretch.

The Huskies were held to a season-low point total, well below their 88.9-point per game average coming in...Washington shot just 36.2 percent from the field and made half of its 12 free throw attempts...Stanford made 41.2 percent of its shots.
