St. Mary's stays hot, downs San Diego

Jan 20, 2011 - 6:25 AM Moraga, CA (Sports Network) - Rob Jones posted 18 points and 13 rebounds to power 22nd-ranked St. Mary's-CA to a 67-56 victory over San Diego at McKeon Pavilion.

Mickey McConnell totaled 17 points and six assists for the Gaels (17-2, 5-0 WCC), who extended their winning streak to 11 games.

Darian Norris scored 14 points to pace the Toreros (3-16, 0-5), who have dropped six straight games.

The Gaels took control from the outset and it appeared the contest was destined to be a blowout after a Clint Steindl dunk extended the lead to 28-12 with 3:50 to play in the opening half.

San Diego, though, put together a 21-2 run that carried over into the second frame. Ken Rancifer drained a three-pointer to cap the surge and give the Toreros their first lead at 33-30.

SMC countered with a 13-1 spurt and Kenton Walker II made a layup to push the advantage back to double-digits with 10 minutes left in regulation. The Gaels led comfortably the rest of the way.
