No. 21 Georgetown tops St. John's in DC

Jan 27, 2011 - 4:30 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jason Clark scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds while Hollis Thompson came off the bench to provide 15 points and six boards as 21st-ranked Georgetown topped St. John's, 77-52, at Verizon Center.

"When you come off the bench, you get an opportunity to see what we're doing right, what we're doing wrong, what we need to do more of and what you need to bring to the table," Thompson said. "When I come in and try to bring that. I think it worked tonight."

Austin Freeman supplied 14 points and moved past Brandon Bowman into 12th place on the all-time scoring list for the Hoyas (15-5, 4-4 Big East), who have won three straight following a three-game slide.

Justin Burrell scored 12 points and pulled down seven caroms in a reserve role and Dwight Hardy added 10 points for the Red Storm (11-8, 4-5), who have lost three in a row and five out of six, all to ranked teams.

The teams split the season series, with St. John's having beaten the Hoyas, 61-58, on January 3.

Freeman's four-point play capped an 11-2 surge that put the Hoyas ahead 25-18 inside of nine minutes remaining in the first half.

Thompson's three-point play and Chris Wright's jumper in the final 64 seconds finished a 10-0 run stretched the Georgetown advantage to 40-27 at the break.

Burrell's three-point play pulled the visitors within 45-39 with 14 1/2 minutes to play before the Hoyas ran off the next eight points to restore their double-digit lead.

"I thought clearly Georgetown played with intelligence, aggressiveness and sustained their effort and level of execution for the 40 minutes and thoroughly dominated us in every aspect of play," St. John's head coach Steve Lavin said. "I thought our team showed some grit, some resolve to cut it to six. We had some possessions where it could have been cut even closer but then Georgetown responded well on another run of their own and closed out the game."

The Red Storm never drew closer than 13 the rest of the way.
