Catron, Oregon top No. 20 Washington
Feb 6, 2011 - 5:48 AM Eugene, OR (Sports Network) - Joevan Catron scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Oregon topped No. 20 Washington, 81-76, in a back-and-forth Pac-10 battle at Matthew Knight Arena.E.J. Singler added 16 points and five assists while Tyrone Nared scored 14 with six boards for the Ducks (12-11, 5-6 Pac 10), who have won four of five.
"It was a good ball game. The guys played hard," Oregon coach Dana Altman said. "The turnovers were a big factor, and we got big baskets. Joevan had a good second half."
Matthew Bryan-Amaning paced the Huskies (15-7, 7-4) with a game-high 21 points. Justin Holiday added 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Isaiah Thomas scored 13 and dished out six assists for Washington, which has dropped three straight.
The Ducks took a 37-34 lead into the half, and Nared's jumper with 12:42 left expanded their advantage to 55-47. After the teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, Catron widened the Oregon edge to 62-52 with a layup.
The Huskies' Scott Suggs answered with a three-pointer, and Holiday's trey with 4:03 to go trimmed the Oregon lead to 70-68.
The back-and-forth battle continued into the final minutes, and Thomas' layup with 40 seconds remaining had the Huskies within 76-74. However, after an Oregon timeout, Singler made a pair from the line.
Singler followed a Venoy Overton layup with two more free throws with 16 seconds left on the clock. Overton then missed a layup that would have made it a one-possession game, and Nared made 1-of-2 free throws to account for the final margin.
Bryan-Amaning paced the Huskies with 12 points in the first half, and even though Washington shot 51.9 percent from the field, Oregon carried a lead into the break.
