Arizona clinches Pac-10 title with win over Oregon

Mar 6, 2011 - 12:21 AM Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - Kyle Fogg scored 20 points as No. 18 Arizona won the Pac-10 regular season title with a 90-82 victory over Oregon at McKale Center.

Solomon Hill and Derrick Williams each had 14 points while Kevin Parrom donated 11 points and five assists for the Wildcats (25-6, 14-4 Pac-10), who finished their first undefeated home season since 1998-99 and have the top- spot in next week's Pac-10 Tournament.

"It's amazing, it's the reason I came here," said Williams about winning the conference. "It's the reason we all came here to just try to win the Pac-10. It's the first step and now hopefully we can win the Pac-10 championship too."

Joevan Catron had 28 points, Garrett Sim added 14 points and Malcolm Armstead gave 12 points and 11 helpers for the Ducks (14-16, 7-11), who dropped their final four games of the season and will face either Oregon State or Arizona State in the first round of the conference tournament.

The Wildcats scored 11 of the first 14 points in the game and held an 11-3 advantage after Hill put in a layup just over three minutes in.

The Ducks were able to keep the game from getting out of hand for the next several minutes and kept it under single digits, but Brendon Lavender buried a three-pointer and Kyryl Natyazhko followed with a jumper for a 28-18 advantage.

Oregon got it back to within five late in the half on a three from Teondre Williams and two from the line by Armstead, but Hill and Lamont Jones hit jumpers for the final points of the half to give Arizona a 41-32 lead.

A Jamelle Horne three-pointer to open the second half gave Arizona a 44-32 lead and the Wildcats extended that to 53-36 on a Jones layup just under four minutes in.

Oregon rallied a bit later with a 13-3 run that cut the deficit to 56-49 on a Tyrone Nared dunk with 12 1/2 minutes to play.

It was then a six-point game when Catron hit two free throws and followed that with a three-pointer to make it a 70-64 contest with under six minutes remaining.

Arizona, though, made it a double-digit game a bit later when Parrom made two free throws to make it 76-66 with 3 1/2 minutes to play.

That proved to be the back breaker as Oregon was unable to trim its deficit under seven the rest of the way.

The Wildcats hold a 45-32 lead in the series with the Ducks...Arizona made 56.0 percent of its shots while Oregon connected on 51.7 percent from the floor...Arizona had a 33-23 edge in rebounds.
