No. 21 Cincinnati routs Alabama State

Nov 14, 2011 - 5:05 AM Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Yancy Gates scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, as the 21st-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats opened the season with a 65-40 rout of the Alabama State Hornets.

Dion Dixon added 14 points for the Bearcats (1-0), who went 26-9 last season and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Sean Kilpatrick donated 13 points and nine boards.

Kenderek Washington tallied 18 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets (0-2), who lost 67-49 to Marshall on Friday. Luther Page ended with 12 points and eight boards.

Cincinnati controlled the game from the start. The Bearcats opened the contest on an 18-2 run, with Gates scoring six points during the spurt.

The margin grew to 35-14 at the half.

"I think we played about as good as we could in the first half," Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin said. "Our veteran guys really know how the defend."

The Bearcats started the second half on a 10-5 flurry to open up a 45-19 lead.

Game Notes

This was the first-ever meeting between Cincinnati and Alabama State on the hardwood...Cincinnati has won 10 consecutive non-conference regular-season home games...The Bearcats went 14-for-20 from the foul line, while Alabama State went 1-for-3 from the charity stripe.
