San Jose State hires Dave Wojcik as basketball coach
Mar 29, 2013 - 9:59 PM San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - San Jose State has hired Boise State associate coach Dave Wojcik as its new head men's basketball coach.Wojcik has spent the last three seasons as the associate head coach under Leon Rice and was part of the staff that led the Broncos to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2008. He has more than 20 years of coaching experience, including stints as an assistant at Wake Forest, Xavier and Tulsa.
"My family and I are thrilled and excited for this great opportunity," said Wojcik. "I am honored to have the responsibility of taking San Jose State into the Mountain West, one of the best basketball conferences in the nation."
Wojcik played college basketball at Loyola. He remains the only player in school history to record a triple-double, with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against St. Francis (PA) in 1989.
San Jose State athletics director Gene Bleymaier believes in Wojcik, who inked a five-year contract.
"We are very pleased to have attracted a person of Dave's background and experience to San Jose State University. He will be a tremendous asset to our basketball program and to the community," stated Bleymaier.
Wojcik takes over for George Nessman, who was fired earlier this month after posting an 86-161 record in seven seasons as the Spartans head coach. SJSU finished just 9-20 this past season and lost to Texas-San Antonio in the WAC Tournament.
