McKie, Wake Forest down No. 19 UNC
Jan 6, 2014 - 6:04 AM Winston-Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis McKie scored 16 points to lead Wake Forest to a 73-67 win over No. 19 North Carolina on Sunday night.Codi Miller-McIntyre netted 11 points, while Tyler Cavanaugh added 11 points for the Demon Deacons (11-3, 1-0 ACC), who improved to 9-0 at home this season.
"It's something that all of us have dreamed about - beating Carolina. For us to come out and actually do it, we all had a great feeling that we would; we all really believed in it, and I think that's where it all started," Miller- McIntyre said.
James Michael McAdoo paced the Tar Heels (10-4, 0-1) with 13 points to go with eight rebounds. Brice Johnson and J.P. Tokoto each finished with 12 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
"We weren't tough enough, physical enough, strong enough, explosive enough," UNC head coach Roy Williams said.
Tokoto tipped in a Marcus Paige miss to tie the game at 38-38 with 15:53 to go in the second half.
Wake Forest proceeded to go on a 15-2 surge as Devin Thomas scored the first two buckets of the run and Madison Jones' jumper at 10:09 capped it for the Demon Deacons' largest lead at 53-40.
Later, Johnson and McAdoo opened and closed a 6-0 sprint with dunks to pull the Tar Heels within six, 56-50, with under six minutes remaining.
North Carolina then used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 64-61 when Tokoto slammed home a Paige miss.
McKie put a nail in Carolina's coffin when he caught a pass from Jones in transition and was fouled as he hit a running layup with just over a minute left. McKie hit the free throw to put the hosts up 67-61.
Arnaud William Adala Moto hit four straight free throws to push the lead back to double digits as Wake Forest completed the upset.
North Carolina led 20-14 midway through the fist half, but couldn't distance itself from Wake.
The hosts crept back into the game and Cavanaugh hit three free throws to cap the scoring in the opening half and help the Demon Deacons to a 34-32 lead at the break.
