Creighton dominates Butler

Jan 15, 2014 - 7:41 AM Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Doug McDermott scored 24 of his 28 points in the first half to lead the No. 20 Creighton Blue Jays to an 88-60 thrashing of the Butler Bulldogs.

Austin Chatman was the only other player in double figures for Creighton (15-2, 5-0 Big East) with 10 points, while Devin Brooks and Will Artino chipped in with nine points each off the bench in the win.

"I got the ball in some spots where I like it," McDermott said. "The guys did a great job recognizing that."

Creighton is now riding a 10-game winning streak following back-to-back losses to San Diego State and George Washington.

Kellen Dunham paced Butler (10-7, 0-5) with 12 points and Khyle Marshall added 11 points in the Bulldogs' fifth straight defeat.

Ethan Wragge knocked down a 3-pointer to help Creighton to a 10-3 lead early, but the Bulldogs hung around. Alex Barlow capped eight straight points for himself with a 3 to cut the Butler deficit to 21-18 midway through the first half.

That is when the game got out of hand.

Kameron Woods fouled McDermott shooting a 3, and he converted all three free throws to ignite a 32-6 run to end the half. McDermott scored 13 points during the surge, including the last five points of the stanza to help the hosts to a commanding 53-24 lead at the break.

Butler shot 3-for-21 over the final 9:33 of the first half en route to the large halftime deficit.

"(Creighton) got it going and when they get it going and they're shooting the basketball at the level they shot in the first half and got it going in transition, they're really hard to stop," Butler head coach Brandon Miller said of his team falling behind in the first half.

The two teams played back-and-forth in the second half as Creighton's reserves played a majority of the stanza as the Blue Jays cruised.
