Richmond takes down No. 13 UMass
Jan 23, 2014 - 3:06 AM Richmond, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kendall Anthony's 21 points led the way as Richmond upended No. 13 Massachusetts, 58-55, in a key Atlantic 10 clash at the Robins Center.Anthony buried 4-of-6 attempts from 3-point range to carry the Spiders, while Cedrick Lindsay added 11 points to help Richmond (13-6, 3-1 A-10) deal the Minutemen their first conference loss of the season.
Sampson Carter netted 15 points and Cady Lalanne had 10 along with 13 rebounds for Massachusetts (16-2, 3-1), but the Minutemen struggled offensively en route to having a six-game win streak snapped.
UMass went an off-target 2-for-14 from beyond the arc, while top scorer Chaz Williams managed only eight points on a 2-of-11 shooting rate.
The Minutemen overcame a slow start to forge a 40-40 tie just past the midway mark of the second half, but Richmond countered with a 10-2 run to regain control.
Lindsay ignited the spurt with back-to-back layups and Derrick Williams knocked down a key 3-pointer before Alonzo Nelson-Ododa was fouled while converting inside. The Spiders' center sank the ensuing bonus attempt to send Richmond ahead by a 50-42 count with 6:08 to play.
A deep contested three by Anthony staked the Spiders to a 55-48 advantage with 3:45 left. However, UMass -- which trailed in the second half in each of its three previous league wins -- appeared poised for another late rally after cutting into the deficit down the stretch.
Carter drained a trey to kick-start a 7-1 flurry that culminated in Trey Davis' runner which brought the Minutemen within 56-55 with 11.1 seconds to go. Lindsay made two critical free throws on the ensuing possession, though, and Williams' 3-point try that would have forced overtime was too strong as time ran out.
Anthony was the difference-maker during a first half in which Richmond never trailed. The junior guard dropped in 13 points in the opening stanza, including every one during an 8-0 run he capped with a long-range three that put the Spiders up 26-17 with just under four minutes to play.
Richmond failed to make a basket over the remainder of the period, though, enabling the Minutemen to close within 27-22 at the break despite shooting just 27.6 percent (8-of-29) for the initial 20 minutes.
UMass then put together an 8-2 surge to begin the second half, with Raphiael Putney's dunk off a Richmond turnover giving the Minutemen their first lead of the night at 30-29.
The Spiders later scored six straight points to reclaim the upper hand at 38-32, but UMass answered with a 6-0 stretch of its own to knot the score with 10:38 remaining.
Game Notes

Carter and Lalanne combined to go 11- of-14 from the field for UMass ... Williams finished with seven assists.
