Brogdon's last second 3-pointer lifts Virginia past Pitt
Feb 3, 2014 - 12:11 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Malcolm Brogdon hit a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds to play as Virginia took a 48-45 victory over No. 18 Pittsburgh on Sunday.Coming off a timeout with 9.1 seconds to play, London Perrantes calmly took the ball down the court and kicked it out to the middle for Brogdon, who hit nothing but net with just 0.4 seconds showing.
"We actually didn't run the play right," Brogdon said. "We ran four screens instead of three. It's basically a play for me to come up and shoot the three. We executed it really well. I haven't hit it one time in practice all year. We've been practicing it all the time and I hit it today."
A desperation full court heave from Lamar Patterson was easily intercepted to end the game.
Brogdon finished with 16 points and Akil Mitchell had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers (17-5, 8-1 ACC), who have won five straight since a four-point loss to Duke on Jan. 13.
Jamel Artis had 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench, and Patterson gave 10 points for the Panthers (18-4, 6-3), who have dropped their past two games.
"We shot 31 percent and were outrebounded, which are things we build our program on and simply didn't get it done," Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said.
The game was close from start to finish as neither side held a lead larger than three points.
An Anthony Gill free throw gave Virginia a 12-9 lead with seven minutes to play in the first half, but Michael Young tied it with a 3 and Artis followed with a jumper to give Pitt a two-point advantage.
Mitchell's dunk tied the game with just over a minute to play, but Cameron Wright put in a layup near the buzzer to give Pitt a 23-21 lead at the break.
Patterson hit a 3-pointer to give Pitt a 33-30 lead with 13 1/2 minutes to play, but then missed a jumper and Justin Anderson followed with a pair of buckets to give Virginia the lead back.
The Cavaliers later got a 3-pointer from Joe Harris for a 41-38 lead with eight minutes to play, but the Panthers scored the next six points, with a Wright jumper giving the team a 44-41 advantage with seven minutes left.
The score was tied at 45-all with just over three minutes to play after a Harris free throws, and both sides missed several shots before Brogdon's bucket sealed the win.
